WHAT IS AN EXHAUST SYSTEM
Vital for fuel economy and the environment, your vehicle??s exhaust system carries away harmful gases that are created during the combustion process. The exhaust system not only keeps dangerous gases like carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons from entering the cabin but it also “cleans up” the gases before they are released into the environment. Here are the components of an exhaust system: Manifold/Manifold ConvertersExtension Pipe/Flex Pipe/Intermediate PipeCatalytic ConvertersOxygen (O2) Sensor PortsIsolators/Gaskets/ClampsResonator AssembliesMufflers/Muffler Assemblies
SIGNS OF MUFFLER WEAR
Mufflers primarily deteriorate from the inside out due to the acidic moisture produced by the combustion process. Other signs you may need to replace your muffler include noise coming from the muffler, a foul odor from not properly filtering exhaust gases or a distorted body shell.
HOW TO TORQUE FLANGES
Progressively tighten bolts on flanges to avoid exhaust system leaks, gasket & stud failure and premature system fatigue & failure. For example, if the nuts require 60-ft-lbs of torque, start by torquing all nuts to 20-ft-lbs, then 40-ft-lbs and finish at 60-ft-lbs. For Y-pipes secure both sides simultaneously, tightening in a rotating sequence between both pipes. For manifold converters, begin sequence in the middle & work evenly out between both sides.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT CLAMP
Manufactured from premium steel, these clamps are available in multiple varieties of saddle, band and wire ring clamps. Selecting the correct clamp style is critical for achieving desired levels of sealability, durability and serviceability. May require separate purchase.
WHY MUFFLER QUALITY MATTERSWHY MUFFLER QUALITY MATTERS
When choosing which muffler to go with, always consider muffler quality. Traditional mufflers are often made of two layers of aluminized steel and can lead to corrosion as moisture becomes trapped between the layers. Whereas, a single shell stainless-steel muffler is less susceptible to corrosion, leading to longer life of the muffler. Other consideration factors include the number of partitions for better reaction to temperature changes and the style of tubes for better sound control.
